SXSW bands announced, my picks

SXSW finally announced their "preliminary list" of 1300 bands playing. The list is quite underwhelming for my tastes, and it annoys the hell out of me that a ton of the bands playing either...

  1. totally don't need the exposure
  2. play sxsw every fucking year

That being said, here's who I may see:

1st tier:

2nd tier

Wristband info after the jump.

Out in the U.S. on Tuesday

Here's the stuff I like that's out this week in the U.S.

Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch [His most rockin' album ever and much better than that god awful Duper Sessions!]

Aereogramme - My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go [I've never liked 'em before but this album is mellow and good!]

Peter Bjorn And John - Writer's Block [I saw 'em at The Roxy the other day and it dawned on me that I only like about half the album.]

The Apples in Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder [Not bad if you program out all the interludes.]

Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City [I've always just thought they were just okay, and this has done nothing to change that,]

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts Of The Great Highway (w/ Bonus CD) [Still a great album, though I'm not sure what the point of the re-release is.]

Loney, Dear - Loney, Noir [Good new Scandinavian guy who I've mentioned a few times before.]

For a full list of this week's releases check out the FILTER blog which I have a part in maintaining.

Moz in Pasadena

[A nice close-up video "Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice" from the 2nd night.]

I only got to see the last night of Moz's three night stand at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Here's the setlist, plus lyric changes and inbetween song banter:

============

Gong drum said "Don't Cry For Me Pasadena" on it.

  • How Soon Is Now
  • You Have Killed Me ["What hell is my body for" / "Diana Doors you'll never be"]

"It's great to be back in St. Louis, Missouri" [a reference to where the awful opener is from]

  • In The Future When All's Well ["Every day I play a pointless game."]
  • Dissapointed ["Rather die than have to sleep with you"]

"Hello, my name is Chester Bennigton"?

  • Ganglord ["Get your fat ass to the ghetto"]

"Are you saying misery? Because that I would understand." [In response to crowd chanting "Morrissey, Morrissey"]

  • Let Me Kiss You

Throws shirt into the crowd.

  • Girlfriend In A Coma
  • Irish Blood English Heart

"This next song is called I Keep Mine Hidden...kidding"

  • The Youngest Was The Most Loved ["A strange wife beside him"]

"As for the game tomorrow, I put my money on the Denver Omlettes"

  • Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice

An inflated condom reaches the stage right as Moz sings "and it comes from the strangest direction."

  • Panic

"It must be nice living here in Pasadena, you have your very own Bristol Farms, your own Rite Aid."

  • National Front Disco

Throws shirt into the crowd.

  • I'll See You In Far Off Places ["And if Bush Bush Bush doesn't kill you"]

Thanks the Pasadena Civic Center staff for putting up with his voice for three nights.

  • Dear God Please Help Me

"Here's a song to cheer you on to Lucky Baldwins"

  • I've Change My Plea To Guilty

"We're going to have a... what do you call it? A party? at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens at midnight tonight"

  • William, It Was Really Nothing
  • I Just Want To See The Boy Happy [Boz on sax outro]
  • Life Is A Pigsty [Piano outro of "Auld Lang Syne"]
  • Everyday Is Like Sunday ["Dear Mum, how I dearly wish I had not been born."]
  • Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want ["Let me have whom i want"]

Encore:

  • The First Of The Gang To Die

"Pasadena, you have thrilled me"

=====

My 23rd time to see him play live and one of the best yet. Check out the great nine minute video someone put together of songs from the first Pasadena show.
