A message from Olly & Gale of Turin Brakes:
While we toured America we discovered something during the many hurried in-store and radio performances we did. Due to the necessity of needing to be stealthy and quick we cut out all the amps, synthesizers and full drum kit in favor of a double bass, piano, acoustic guitars and a snare drum with percussion and to our delight the music gained an intimate, raw and soulful power.
America has always been somewhere that celebrates musicianship and songcraft, and the great reaction we got to our new approach proved to us that taking more risks and allowing ourselves more space for musical interaction was paying off. We also found that as a five piece band we were simply having more fun this way, filling the new found space with spontaneous playing as opposed to getting stuck in the same wall of sound every night just because it works.
We were so energized by this approach that we have decided to present our music this way on our forthcoming tour of the UK and Europe, and also put together an inspired EP containing two great previously unreleased songs ["Jet Trail", "Love Is All You Deserve"], a killer cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Breaking The Girl" from one of the American radio sessions, and a brand new unplugged version of "Red Moon." You might even hear it on the radio...! We're going to make this release exclusively available on our UK tour, but you can bet a few copies will end up in the more discerning record shops.
We're very pleased to be putting out an EP for the first time since the year 2000, and the fact it will be available at the shows is a real buzz, it feels healthy to be creating again...... The future is now. TBx
If you wanna hear their Chili Peppers cover, stream their latest KCRW session, and f-fwd to 23:30. Their latest album Jackinabox is out now.
